Easy to install but haven’t use it yet. But so far it’s a product that you can’t leave it on your car while you’re out there skiing. You have to uninstall it after you take your gears out cause the brackets doesn’t have enough security. Just thump screws where someone can just unscrew the whole thing and walk off with it. I guess that’s why it’s so cheap.Update:I used it on my trip today and it work perfectly fine. Drove with it at 80mph with strong wind and it didn’t open at all which I was worried about it at first but it did the job. The only thing is it has poor security.
Like others have stated, the racks clamp to your crossbars using quick-release skewers and thumb nuts. This is certainly a security risk, and while the racks themselves have decent keyed locks, it would be a marginal amount of effort for a thief to simply unclip the clamps and run off with your gear AND your racks.A few dollars at the hardware store and you can replace your thumb screws with lock nuts (6mm, 1.0 thread pitch), and completely replace the quick release skewers. I used 2” 10-24 hex head bolts with lock nuts and washers for this. This small upgrade will significantly increase the security of the racks, and is especially worth it if you keep them mounted to your car for the whole season. The racks also mount to the clamps using plastic hand nuts (with metal thread inserts). While less of a security concern, these are also easy to replace with lock nuts, to alleviate any worry that the hand nuts might loosen over time. The supplied bolts are also 6mm 1.0 thread pitch, and I tossed fender washers in there too to better distribute the bolt’s clamping force.
Well, I have the brightlines cross bars on my jeep, and needed a new ski rack to replace my rhino rack that is too long to fit. After looking at the reviews, I took a chance. The rack itself is good. Not great, not "eh".. It locks, has a nice big button to open easily if you had gloves on, and it's decent as far as it's manufacturing. As said on here in other reviews, all of the mounting is hand tightening. So yes, someone could.. Could... Put in some effort and remove the entire rack without tools and take your gear. With the jeep, that would be challenging, since I need a step stool to install. It would not be a "fast" steal, but they could. Then again, with my rhino rack, with a power screwdriver, they could do the same thing. This is for transport, I wouldn't keep skis on it overnight. And it is inconvenient enough that no one is going to just take a chance. It's the old saying "if someone wants your stuff, they're going to get it regardless".That said, there's room for a locking nut on each bolt, so that will deter a bit more, and I'll probably do that. The good side? These are the least expensive racks I've seen. They are definitely not the best.. But even the rhino rack is close to double the price. What they are, are a cost effective way to bring your skis to the mountains.Haven't tried them on the road yet, but I've installed them and pushed and pulled on them pretty hard, and they didn't move a millimeter.. Even with the hand tightening of the attachments. So, I'm going to keep them. I'm more concerned with day trips and won't be leaving the skis in the rack unattended anyway. If you need a ski rack, and don't want to invest, you won't go wrong buying these. Easy to install, and again, can always add a couple of locking nuts if you're worried about the hand thiefs.
